Steel or Fiberglass Entry Door: 10 Questions Before You Choose

1. Start with exposure, not the showroom sample

Record which direction the entry faces, how much overhang protects it, whether wind-driven rain reaches the threshold, how intense the sun is, and whether coastal air, freezing weather, or sprinkler water is relevant. Then ask each supplier how the proposed finish and assembly should be maintained under those conditions.

2. Compare the exact finish system

Steel doors may be painted in many ways, while fiberglass surfaces may be painted or designed to resemble wood. For a double-door or sidelite arrangement, add the meeting stile, inactive-leaf hardware, sill, and glazing configuration to the brief.

5. Ask for performance documentation on the exact configuration

6. Coordinate security and everyday operation

7. Inspect the existing opening before finalizing the order

Photograph the opening inside and outside. 8. Normalize the installation scope

Get the current written warranty and exclusions for the exact supplier and product. Do not transfer warranty assumptions from one steel or fiberglass brand to another.

Add rows for the exact assembly, size, swing, frame, threshold, glazing, finish, hardware, performance documentation, freight, installation, trim, disposal, lead time, warranty, exclusions, and total installed scope.
